I’ve been living in and writing about China since 2005. My work has largely centred on Chinese youth culture and the arts, looking to tell humanising, community-focused stories and help build greater — but not uncritical — understanding of a complex, rapidly changing country.
Writing
My writing has appeared in publications such as The Wire, Associated Press, the Financial Times, Vogue, Courier, and The Times.
I have interviewed dozens of Chinese musicians, artists and entrepreneurs, as well as international stars such as Kanye West, Keith Richards and Justin Bieber.
Some examples of my writing can be found here.
Editing
I was previously managing editor at Time Out Shanghai and RADII, have sub-edited for publishers including Condé Nast, and helped copy edit a number of books on China.
Consulting
I have acted as an advisor on China-related projects for Warner Music Group, AEG Live, Diageo, Hilton Hotels and more. I have also spoken about music and entertainment in China to Billboard and on primetime BBC Five Live and BBC World Service shows.
